New performers

This person (Clayton) will be our new performer this time we have been promised commitment as our last individual was very unreliable. He has had previous experience in filming. He is also a dancer which means he has been involved in camera work before. This means he should also be a good performer. It was unfortunate that we had to let our previous performer go as he has done alot of work in front of the camera.

we have may use additional performer if necessary called David he was willing to help he has done a little work in front of the camera.

The old female performer wasn't available. Our other female performer considered to help us to play wretches girlfriend (Clayton).

production blog

Currently in lesson we have been assesing other groups footage. Peer assesing has enabled us to help other groups as well as our own. peering assessing has allowed us to get opinions from other groups. this then allows our group to consider making any chnages or re shoot any footage.

Positive points we got from other groups so far in our production

  • narrative is quite clear
  • good editing
  • good effects
  • quality footage
  • excellent camera work
  • variety of shots
  • many locations used
Possibly improve on

  • more effects

As our group is aiming for a level four we must...
  • use alot of technical skills

Peer self assesing has given our group little to think about but alolot of future facts to consider. We must stick to our time scheudle ensuring our video is

prodction blog

This week i hope to upload images of our new performer. A photoshoot will take place after school to take images and we will continue filming.

production blog

Our group has experienced some issues with our performer as he had proved to be very unreliable. Therefore leading us to chage our perforemer whch has been very dfficult and painful as we had starter on possible poster and cd cover. After changing or perforemer we had found some one else who ws proving to be unreliable. we quickly disposd of this person and found a new performer who seeems to be very commited to helping us in our music video. He is a peformer which is benefical to our group and is confident in front of the camera. He is our third performer which has been very stressful trying to find a new performer but we believe he can do the job. He has done dance performeancs in front of the camera and has been in volved in simlair work before.

Feedback

Teddy, you have made some real headway with your blog - well done. Your presentation of your audience research is particularly good. You should now work towards:
1) uploading storyboard sequences
2) lower the volume of the backing track on the vox pop footage
3) include a range of location shots with explanation that you intend to use

Themes (POSSIBLE)

Generic codes

Generic codes of R&B/ Hip-Hop

Technical codes

-lots of two shots can be used to show the two people (Boy and Girl) together

- tracking shots and performance of the artist towards their "lover" in the video is

also generic

Symbolic codes

-interactions with the other model who is playing the part of the lover such as; touching, holding, deep stares into their eyes and a common generic symbolic code is when a male/female holds their partners chin and gazes into their eyes.

Generic conventions

-Objects such as rings, bangles and necklaces's are all generic for a R&B/Hip-Hop video

-Dark colours are often used to portray negative feelings of the artist

-Bright and vibrant colours are used to show the artists positive feelings

-R&B video's tend to be performance and narrative based .

Generic conventions

- Items of Mise en scene such as rings, bangles and necklaces/ expensive jewellery are all generic for an R&B/Hip-Hop video

- Clothing will range from stereotypical attire for the main grime artist, his spouse and other minute characters in the video in order to fit into the conventions of the genre appropriately and aim at our main target audience well. However the costumes will also have a sense of casualness to them, that can illustrate a less intimidating and more sophisticated/ laid back feeling to the performers and the video on a whole, which will be useful to subverting the conventions because of the romantic tone that the video will possess.

- Dark colours are often used to portray negative feelings of the artist (through the grime genre and somewhat stereotypical portrayal of artist from a Marxist perspective)

- Bright and vibrant colours however will also be used to show the artists positive feelings, which will connote well towards the song as it is meant to be positive and uplifting, and therefore also subversive to the genre.

- R&B video's tend to be performance and narrative based

Me and you lyrics analysis

This song is sung by Haydon and wretch 32, wretch 32 is a predominantly grime artist whereas Haydon is an RnB artist. The main performer of the song is wretch 32, he is discussing his relationship in this song. Wretch 32 has made many songs about his love life; this is one of his more famous ones. He is an unsigned artist who is relatively well known in the Grime scene.

The opening verse of the lyrics of the song, reaffirm that this is a love song, as the Haydon singer says “Me and you”. This shows that this singer is talking about a relationship with a girl, as very few if any grime songs are based on homosexual relationships. We then here wretch 32 explain that he will not leave his girl, this represents him as caring which I think our group will have to take into consideration when thinking of how we will represent the main male performer. Wretch 32 then describes the reasons as to why his girlfriend likes him, e.g. he says,”with my smile she can’t stay mad at me”. This represents the artist as confident and comfortable with himself, this is a stereotypical representation of grime and hip hop artists. This alpha male representation is something our group will try to mediate in our music video. The fact that wretch then says “my egos a problem, were working around”, shows that he is aware of his over confidence and need to please, which is unconventional representation of a grime artist, giving our group a option to make the main performer less conventional. The mentioning of another male suggests that there may be a love triangle involved, which is a theme that we may also be able to incorporate into our music video.

In the next verse wretch wretch 32 shows that he is committed to his relationship, as he mentions the idea of marriage in the lyric, “i can put a ring around your finger”, this is also an unconventional representation of a grime/ hip hop artist as they are normally represented as disrespectful towards women. The chorus then plays where we hear the singer Haydon, expressing his care for his partner. He says, “you, words can’t describe”, this a quite stereotypical representation of an rnB singer as these type of lyrics are commonly seen in RnB music videos.

In the next verse we hear the artist wretch 32 acting like a alpha male once again, as he shows his supposed authority over his girlfriend. He says, “She knows what the rules allow”, here wretch 32 is claiming that there are certain rules which his girlfriend must abide by, making him look like the more superior in the relationship. The representations of wretch 32 we see in this verse reflect the stereotypical representation of grime artist in music videos. We are also given this impression of wretch 32 in the following lyrics where he says “money ain’t a Thing”, here he shows off that he is reasonably wealthy. This is commonly done by grime and Hip Hop artist, two very similar genres, as this is a genre in which artists are very money motivated and like to show their wealth and success.

In the next verse we here wretch 32 assert his affection for his girl, he says, “she makes me smile on a rainy day”. This lyric once again represents wretch 32 as a caring and affectionate person, especially towards his girlfriend. Here wretch 32 is not being represented as a stereotypical grime artist as grime artist tend to be portrayed as “tough guys” , who are not very emotional. We also her from wretch 32 in this verse that he in the past was with a lot of girls but has matured and changed his ways, he says, “ girls come and go, I’m tired of the campaign”. This lyric shows that wretch 32 is trying to settle down and commit to one girl.

In the next verse we hear Haydon proclaim his affection for his own girlfriend, just as wretch 32 had done previously. This is a conventional representation of RnB artists and something the audiences would expect. He says, “all I need is your touch”, which shows that Haydon is very passionate. The song ends with wretch repeating “all i need is you baby”, this ending is similar to the opening of the song in that it makes it clear that the songs main theme is love.

Overall, we can say that this song is represents the main artist both conventionally and unconventionally considering the genre of the song. There are some verse where the artist, wretch 32 is represented as caring and affectionate, which is not a stereotypical representation of grime artists. However, there are also verses where wretch 32 is represented as a macho alpha male and the more superior in the relationship. The two different sides to wretch 32 identified in the lyrics shows that in our music video we can have some creative freedom considering the fact that it is a grime song. Our group will also consider making the artist less stereotypical considering the lyrics are allowing us to, also this will help us to make our music video more original.

From grime pedia

Wretch 32 (real name Jermaine Sinclair) is a grime MC and rapper from Tottenham, North London. He was a member of the grimecollective "Combination Chain Gang", before forming The Movementwith Scorcher, Ghetto, Devlin and Lightning. Despite his claims to be a grime MC, Wretch has faced frequent criticism from dedicated grime fans, who accuse him of making "bait" hip-hop which he attempts to pass off as grime music. This is due to his unusually impressive technical lyrical ability (more often assocaited with rap) for a grime MC, his fairly monotonous flow and a tendency to spit over hip-hop sounding beats. He is also often associated with theTMT crew, also from Tottenham, due to his close relationship to fellow Tottenham rapper Cell 22. The pair have made several songs together.

Snopp Dogg beautiful

Artist - Snopp dogg ft pharrell
Genre - hip hop
Video - performanced
release - January 28, 2003 (U.S.) April 1, 2003 (Europe)
director - Chris Robinson

  • Very stereotypical view of music videos
  • In south America Brazil many long shots of the environment
  • We see a girl doing snopp doggs hair - male gaze just there to be objectified by male audiences
  • Location at the beach- normally women on beach in provocative clothing (hot country)
  • lyrics link with action phrallel does a camera with his hand as he says 'beautiful' - there a relationship between lyrics and images.
  • We see women walking and sitting on the beach
  • This is adhere conventions of a hip hop video
  • Alot of women on display for male purpose- alot of eye candy
  • Laura malvey- sexual objectification and male gaze strongly applies to a video such as this.
  • Presence of women solely for the purpose of men
  • Voyeristic treatment of female body in 'male' videos - use of dancers as adornments to the male ego
  • We see snopp dogg and a female making out
  • The same with phrallel
  • We also audiences
  • We see women playing football which is number 1 sports in the world this make link into how they feel about women
  • We then see a big street party like a carnival which is famous in brazil
  • We also see a party in a mansion which is normally a genric code of a music video helps audiences identify what type of music they are listening to
  • artist are wearing hip hop like clothing jewellery hat tattoos. showing masculinity
Overall we see that women are use alot for voyersistic treatment. 'Beautiful' is relating to how they describe the women. This video does link into generic codes of hip hop video. Men and women partying having a good time. male artist showing masculinity and women normally seems as eye candy.

Goldie - inner city life (Marxist)

Artist - goldie
video - narrative and performance

Marxism

This theory talked about how the media could be used for good purposes.

Dominant ideology

Dominant ideology thesis is associated with Karl marx and his claim that each historical era is dominated by the intellectual ideas of its economically and politically ruling class.

Dominant ideology means the principal ideas, values and morals in a given society.

The dominant ideology thesis asserts that working-class subordination in capitalist societies is largely the outcome of the cultural dominance achieved by the capitalist class. For Marx, the ruling ideas in a given society are always the ideas of the ruling social group.

Hegemony

Ideological hegemony arises in a situation where a particular ideology is pervasively reflected throughout a society in all principal social institutions and permeates cultural ideas and social relationships.

Inner city life is a track by goldie. This video has many readings that subvert and adhere normally sterotypical views. the lyrics 'inner city life. inner city life. We first see a aerial shot of a rural urban estate. We see a mother in a kitchen in the flat with two children. We already get a sence of a hard life as she seems single. We see electricity bills that need paying. 'inner city life' could be referencing to the hard life that takes place.

Seeing estate normally shows bad negative things in a community. We see children playing basketball. Enjoying themselves. Marxist theory talks about how the media has power in terms of delivering a message as it can be use for bad and good. The message seems to be good and just showing the struggle that can take place. This video seems to subvert what people would normally think of urban estates and the way children act. high angle shots on the kid could show society looking down on children brought up in this environment. We see close up of a child not looking to happy as if to say he not happy with the way society constantly look at him. As the camera is on him for a good few seconds zooming in to his face. We see a bmw which is a expensive car which may belong to a drug dealer of some sort or possibly stolen.

We then see a club scene of involving jump cuts of the dj and people in the club. there is a close up shot of goldie. This is a stereotype of people in these estates just partying enjoying themselves we don't see anything negative such as drug dealing of any sort. further on we see an old car getting burnt which is a stereotypical views of people who live on estates. Youth being represented to be violent. Which is unfair on youths the dominant ideology seems to be very important.

We see a aerial shot of a women on her bed having a rough time lying down she sleeps with her children struggling to cope with money as the earlier bills show.

Overall this video does link in to Karl Marxist theory as we see working class society represented in a different way. The natural media image would be youths causing trouble drugs being sold at parties. This video doesn't show any of that. Karl Marxist theory plays on the idea of the media image which can be portrayed in different ways negative and positive. this link in to the belief of hegemony as the views on a working class area seems to be reflected in this video stereotypical views are being subverted.

Eminem without me (narrative and concept based)

Eminem -without me
Genre - Rap
video - narrative & concept based
release -may 21st 2002
director - Joseph kahn

Eminem - Without Me
Uploaded by Eminem. - See the latest featured music videos.

This video is performane by artist Eminem which has features of a narrative and concept based video. This artist is known for his comical use in music videos allowing him to relate to his audiences who find this appealing in his videos. Eminem has established an iconography in videos as being comical has allowed him to gain recognition. Parody is a main feature in this video which i'll explore.

At the opening of the video we see an announcement as if it on the news being told world wide. I believe this is significant as the artist is trying to represent himself as being very important. The on screen words say 'the eminem show'. This adhere hiphop artist as they always want to make a name for them self. He trying to show how important he is by doing this. We also get a small clip of obie trice saying ' Obie trice real name no gimmicks' this has some intertextuality referencing to an interview where he was asked if this was his real name. Also eminem has used his music video to promote some one he has just signed to his record label. This promotes his record label 'shady interscopes'.

We see a child taking something that he shouldn't which we can tell through the text 'crisis'.

As the video goes on we see some intertextual referencing to comics as we see a banner ' at a local discount store'. This may have intextuality referencing to comics. Also the video is relating to audiences of lower groups as we see a large estate which is in reference to batman comics. But we see him later put on a Robin costume. Here we could say he is trying to reach out to younger audiences. Using this concept of comics is also a parody his on screen actions show him to be childish as he jumps up and scratches himself. Robin character in batman is seen as a typical tennage kid just trying to enjoy life but clearly needs some directions. Hence him not being batman who is dr.dre (who discovered eminem). Already we see some generic codes of a hiphop video as we see women with eminem. It does link into andrew goodwin theory of music vidoes as emnem is trying to appeal to younger audiences sending out a message about his music. There is lots of shots on the main artist. There is a relationship between lyrics and on screen actions as we see him on a hospital while he mentions doctors.

We see intertexuality referencing to a game show and family shows (Sandy) where we see him talking about his mother. Again we see referencing to comics in the style of how the on screen font is represented. The artist also address the relationship with his mum.

We now see another convention of a hiphop video as we see a sports car which is address as the rap mobile. This is a intertextuality referencing to the bat mobile from batman. which is also a parody alongside how emniem is acting making robin look very childish. We see Elvis Presley on 'E!' the celebrity news channel. Again eminem is trying to promote his message in a unorthodox way. His lyrics match to the on screen actions quite well as he refers to wrestling we two wrestlers fighting each other. Eminem starts to acknowledge dr dre as he nods his head instead of acting childish in the car moving about uneccesarily. We see more intertextuality referencing to American reality tv shows. Mise-en-scene is used in multiple ways as it effectively creates an atmosphere of where audiences can identify what is happening.

Overall we can see Eminem is trying to reach out to younger audiences. Doing a superhero from a comic works very well. The parody of the comic is effective in reaching younger mindes. The referncing to osama biden ladin could be saying this is how he wants to let the world know about his messages. As Osama bin laden was making messages from a cave. We see Eminem dancing in the costume. We get a second close up of the child looking at the cd he shouldn't have bought. We then see eminem take the cd off the child. A close up shot of the cd lets us know children shouldn't be listeneing to his music. He has made himself seem like a hero. The video represent its self well delievering a strong image to younger audiences. Eminiem has identified himself with younger audiences ver well.

Missy elliot she a bitch (counter)

Artist- Missy elliot
genre - hip hop
video - performance based
Released - april 20th 1999
Director hype williams

She a bitch is a hip hop track performed by artist Missy elliot. As the video starts we already get a very sinister vibe from the artist. But the beat seems very hip hop which still is conventional. But the dark colour scheme for the video does challenge generic codes for the video. At the beginning we see missy elliot wearing a black costume which challenges the female conventional codes as they do not wear this type of clothing. Wearing this type of male clothing is clearly identified through mise-en-scene. Already there is some intertextuality referencing to the movie blade. This film main character blade is a heroic character who fights vampires. His role wouldn't be seen as a women role to play. As heroes are normally men. Who are a strong. Representation of gender is instantly countered as this is not expected of the female or male hip hop audiences.

Looking at both costumes we can see the similarity blade was made in 1998. This video challenges the idea of feminism and post feminist views. We can clearly see she doesn't care what people think as she has her own style. She embraces that she is different and loves it. Blade the character was a bit different as he was half vampire and human. the intertextuality referencing is very interesting. But there may be some post feminist views as she is in control of what she doing. She not doing it for the pleasure she saying this sis who i am. 'Nigga you pissed on trip I'mma have to bust you in your lips' these lyrics are what you would expect off a male artist. Missy Elliot seems to reject conventional representation of women free from objectification. the video adhere typical feature of a female hip hop artist video. We have a high angle shot on her for quite some time thisa could be representing how the industry looks down on her and how she challenges the norm of getting recognition in the music industry. Then we have a low angle shot of her walking whcih could be saying she striving towards something with her new look.

The vidoe is one of the most expensive of all time so missy elliot wanted to put out her message that she weren't a normal artist who followed other artist which is a post feminist reading. Her styl counters feminism very much. As the video plays we see her in a car which again challenges forms and conventions of a female hip hop video. She is a very androgyny artist due to her clothing. She does not conform to to stereotypes of gender representation. We then see female dancers in the video which is a convention of a hip hop video but she doesn't wear provocative clothign like them. she wears male type clothing which is another. unconventional feature of her.

Overall missy elliot unconventional approach to music has allowed her to have an image of her own that has worked sucessfully. There is still a post feminst feel to the video but she has done it in her own way. Although not entirely post feminist as she doesn't go for a sexy female approach. She has given a differnet impression of typical female artist. She has gained an image of her own she just enjoying who she is. she counters feminsit views strongly as she has played a male type role in this video.

Post Feminist readings Rhianna

Rhianna - Umbrella
released in April 2007
directed by: Chris applebaum
Genre : R&B/POP
video type: Performance based

Umbrella is a track performed by rnb/pop artist Rhianna. This performance based video is conventional and generic as it has expected features from a R&B/pop video as there is choreographed dancing throughout with various camera shots. At the start we various shot of rhianna we get a good medium close up showing her costume. As she is a very popular artist she is known for her provocative audience and a strong role model to women. As we she this shot alot of flesh is being put on display already this may entice male audiences to pay attention as the different shots bring our attention to the artist. This may not be the case as this video gives us strong post-feminism and female gaze values.

As the video plays we see dancers surrounded buy jayz which is identified through mise-en-scene and on screen movements as we can see they are chroegraphed. The dancers are wearing the same outfits. this follows generic codes and convention of music videos as normally the artsitw ould be surrounded by dancers as they sing the lyrics. It allows the audience to identify themselves with the music as we can tell it 's a hip/hop track. jays apperance will attract the hip hop/rap audiences. Rhianna is apart of his record label 'Def jam records'. This type of music is played on hip hop/Rnb channels. 8,000 plus views on mtv for this channel. The video is also online for viewers to watch.

We see alot of camera actions as the video plays , medium shots and wide shots are use to make jump with short qiuck editing. There is a clear relationship between the lyrics and action. As she is dodging water which an umbrella is for. Female audiences can identify with this video and gratifications theory of personal identity. Rhianna video may be linked in with th post feminist reading as we can see her enjoying her success as worldwide artist. She is embracing who she is. The video connotes that rhianna is independent and strong female who is proud of who she is. This video may still appeal to male audiences as her appearance can connote negative ideas of women as sex objects which relates to the hypodermic needle theory.

Post feminism can be linked into this video as audiences can gain a very conventional and generic feeling. Rhianna is dressed like this as she feels comfortable in provactive clothing. She is not neccesarily doing it for the male audiences. This argument can be countered as men may see this video to be voyeuristic they may be pleased with what she appears in throughout the video. But rhianna isnt all over men. She isn't doing this for the pleasure of men. She is dancing alone happy in her environment. She objects to the theory which would position her to be apart of the male gaze.

Audiences may recognise the famous dance en pointe bullet which she uses throughtout the video. There is also some intertextuality refernecing to Michael Jackson bille jean and madona fever when she is in the gold paint. There is a polysemic reading here as rhianna could be relating herself to her success and appealing to older audiences.

Overall from this video we gain a very post feminist reading through conventions, representation, institutions and audience. AS she has related herself to jayz who is a popular artist. She has very clear open reference to R&B video as there is a use of props , dancing, match on action editing, use of computer imagery, close up of her facial expression. All these things show her as a powerful artist through intertextuality. Her image has allowed her to become more recognise artist en pointe ballet was famously used in michael jackons bille jean music video. she has compared her self to a amazing artist and popullar video. She makes herself seem like music was for her. She strengthens her using jayz in her video as he is a famous rapper.

Lady gaga textual analysis (post modern music video)

narrative and performance based video

Paparazzi is performed by Lady Gaga which is directed by Jonas akerlund. As the video start we see various shot such as medium close up and establishing which help us identify the scene. We see a large house which has money every where. which show wealth to the audience as the 'paparazzi' are obsessed with the rich and famous. The mise-en-scene of props of jewellery money everywhere and newspaper with lady gaga on the front cover. Her face on the cover on american money may be infering her popularity and fame. This may have some intertextuality referencing to sunset boulevard a popular film from the 1950s. There are narrative referencing alongside stylistic similarities to this film.

As the video play we get a feeling of a old Hollywood style referencing as the typography seems very old styled. this is an example of patische /homage as this lets us no there will be some type of narrative in this video. the subtitles at the very end are the same as the y seem very old styled as well. The text 'lady gaga in paparazzi' is a generic convention as it is a lady playing a leading role in a production.

As we come to the next scene we see lady gaga making out with her partner we get a strong sence that this is going to be a narrative video as no music is being played. As lady gaga comes upon the balcony we see a point of view shoot as a photographer is taking pictures of her. she is thrown off by her boyfriend after being slapped. we then see Hitchcock homage it ios a reference to one of his films vertigo . Where there is a use of a blonde 'femme fatale' this referencing is very powerful for audiences to understand Lady Gaga state of mind. we see lady gaga doing some performance which is conventional of a pop track.

As the video continues we see mid shot of a dead body in a bathroom. Also a close up, medium shot and long shot of a dead body at the end the stairs. A manikin is seen as well on the grass. This may be showing her mind state as she may want revenge on her boyfriend. We see lady gaga wearing a humanoid kind of costume. this intertextuality reference is a breakdown of distinction between binary divides. There is a blurring of reality of fiction and as we see lady gaga represented in two different ways. at the start of the video she seems sweet and innocent at the end she becomes popular after killing her boyfriend 'she innocent... she's back'the papers still love her after what shes done. We then she her taking mug shot as she in a police station the mise-en-secene helps us to identify this.

We see lady gaga wearing a mini mouse costume and the poisoning her boyfriend. This costume could help her relate to younger audiences who listen to pop music. There is a very mixed feeling as she tries to look innocent about it. Overall we can see this video has many different readings which lady gaga promotes well through a good use of mise-en-scene.
